How Sport Becomes a Tool for Social Integration in War-Time Ukraine: A Case Study by United by Sport
In times of war, the infrastructure of "normal life" often collapses, leaving youth without stable social circles or constructive outlets for stress. United by Sport (UBS) has documented how structured physical activity serves as more than just exercise—it acts as a vital mechanism for social integration and psychological resilience.
Since 2022, millions of Ukrainian youth have faced displacement, loss of community, and disrupted education. The primary challenges identified by our field experts include:
- Isolation: Displaced youth struggle to integrate into new host communities.
- Chronic Stress: Lack of safe spaces for emotional release.
- Disengagement: A decline in motivation to participate in civic or educational life.
United by Sport, in collaboration with European partners via Erasmus+, implemented a trauma-informed mentorship model. This case study highlights our approach during the LTTA (Learning, Teaching, and Training Activities) and local implementation phases.
Physical activity levels the playing field. Whether on a football pitch or in a yoga session at the Career Festival, the focus shifts from individual trauma to collective goals. This "neutral territory" allows displaced youth and local residents to interact without the barriers of social status or background.
Our mentors are trained not just to improve athletic performance, but to act as social anchors. By using Elevator Pitches and Impact Strategies (as seen in our Portugal training), mentors guide youth through:
- Building self-confidence.
- Conflict resolution during team play.
- Goal setting for the future.
To keep youth engaged, we modernized traditional physical education. By introducing AI-driven training plans, we provided teachers with the tools to create personalized, inclusive experiences. This digital-first approach ensures that youth with varying physical abilities—including those with war-related injuries—are fully integrated into the group.
Our case study indicates that 85% of participants in UBS-led programs reported a "stronger sense of belonging to their community" within three months.
- Enhanced Social Cohesion: Reduced tension between displaced populations and host communities through joint sports festivals.
- Professional Development: Over 3000 teachers trained in innovative, inclusive PE methods.
- Global Connectivity: Ukrainian mentors now exchange best practices with peers from Portugal, Spain, and Italy, bringing international standards to local gyms.
The experience of United by Sport proves that social integration through sport is not a luxury—it is a necessity for post-conflict recovery. Our model is scalable, transparent, and ready for further international collaboration.
United by Sport continues to seek partners to expand this case study into new regions of Ukraine.
